2027: Jonathan’s Eligibility For Presidency Sparks Legal Debate

Senior lawyers across Nigeria have expressed differing views on the eligibility of former President, Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.


Papers News reports that their reactions followed reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is considering offering the former president an automatic presidential ticket, provided he returns to the party and resumes active political participation.


However, the proposal has reignited constitutional questions, particularly regarding Section 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, which stipulates that no person can be sworn in as President more than twice.
