President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to strengthening ties with Nigerians in the diaspora, declaring them vital partners in the country’s development agenda.
Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, President Tinubu made the declaration at the 2025 National Diaspora Day (NDD) celebration held Friday in Abuja. The event drew participants from across the world, including government officials, diplomats, development partners, and representatives of Nigerian communities abroad.
As a major highlight, Akume unveiled the ‘Home & Abroad Housing Platform’—a flagship initiative aimed at easing property acquisition for Nigerians in the diaspora. The platform seeks to eliminate the common challenges of fraud, lack of transparency, and bureaucratic bottlenecks that often discourage overseas Nigerians from investing in real estate back home.
In her welcome remarks, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, praised the resilience and contributions of the estimated 20 million Nigerians living overseas. She highlighted their role in foreign remittances, skills transfer, global diplomacy, and innovation.
“Every kobo sent home by the diaspora sustains a life, grows a business, or builds a community. You are our pride abroad,” she said.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs, Senator Aniekan Bassey, underscored the need for robust institutions and sustained collaboration to harness the full potential of Nigerians abroad. He called for stronger legal frameworks to protect diaspora investments and deepen their involvement in national planning and policy.
