Meranda Resigns, Obasa Returns, to Resign, New Speaker to Emerge Wednesday as Lagos State Assembly Crisis Reaches Anticlimax

The crisis began when Obasa was impeached by 36 out of 40 lawmakers on January 13, 2025, while President Tinubu was in Abu Dhabi. Meranda was elected as his replacement, becoming the first female Speaker in the Assembly’s history.


At Sunday’s critical meeting, which included all Assembly members, GAC leaders, and Governor Sanwo-Olu:


President Bola Tinubu’s intervention led to the compromise solution, allowing Obasa a “soft landing” through voluntary resignation rather than impeachment. Both Meranda and Obasa must submit their resignation letters to the Governance Advisory Council by Wednesday.
