President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pushed back against rising concerns that the wave of high-profile defections into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may be steering Nigeria toward a one-party system, saying the defections are a reflection of the people’s democratic choices and aspirations.
Speaking at the APC National Summit at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, Tinubu addressed critics of the growing dominance of the APC, which has recently welcomed a string of prominent defectors from opposition parties.
“Before I speak, I just need to tell those saying one party system is not good. It’s one party ruling and driving the aspirations of Nigerians. Where do they stand? You don’t blame a people bailing out of a sinking ship when there’s no life jacket,” the President began, with a hint of defiance.
